THE MISTS OF SCHATTSWALD | BLOODSTONE #2

The morning after successfully defending Crow's Hollow from diseased werewolves, the party awakened to discover that the orphaned girl they had rescued remained unconscious despite a full night's rest. Concerned for her well-being and uncertain who could care for her, they decided to seek help from the village's apothecary. The Traveler knocked on the door of the apothecary shop, where they encountered the dragon-like shopkeeper, Pyrrhus, who had previously made unsettling requests for body parts.

Upon examining the girl more closely, they discovered a troubling sight - a small, jagged scratch on her neck that appeared to be from a single werewolf claw. More alarming still was the black infection spreading outward from the wound like dark veins beneath her skin. The apothecary confirmed their fears that she should have awakened by now, and attempts to treat the wound with healing salve proved ineffective, unlike when similar treatments had worked on Faust's previous infection.

Mike used his unique ability to consume and analyze the memories of a fallen werewolf, revealing disturbing visions of the Black Maw pack's fate. The memories showed the werewolves venturing into the corrupted Blightoak area, where they became infected with a mysterious blight that caused convulsions, red eyes, fur loss, and violent aggression toward their own packmates. This infection was clearly more advanced and dangerous than anything they had encountered before.

Realizing the girl needed more specialized care than the small village could provide, the party decided to travel to Wolfsbrünn, the nearest major settlement known to have divine healers. Mike sent a crow with a message ahead to warn the town of their arrival and request that a healer be prepared. Meanwhile, The Traveler successfully convinced a compassionate local farmer to lend them his cart and donkey for the journey, along with supplies for the road.

The party loaded into the cart and began their perilous journey through the ancient Schattwald forest, a place of perpetual mist and twisted trees where many travelers never returned. Mike's knowledge of the forest paths proved invaluable as he navigated them safely through the first leg of their journey, avoiding the forest's natural tricks and illusions that led travelers astray.

As night fell and the forest transformed into an even more dangerous realm, the party wisely decided to make camp rather than risk traveling in darkness. They fortified their position and took a long rest, with various members engaging in preparation activities. The Traveler gave the girl some medicine from his pack to help with her fever, though it could only treat the symptoms rather than the underlying infection.

During the night, mysterious blue spirit flames appeared in the forest, seeming to beckon the party. Following these ethereal guides proved fortuitous, as they led the group through a shortcut that would save them several hours of travel time. However, the respite was temporary - after their rest, they noticed the black infection had spread from the girl's neck down to her shoulders, and her condition continued to deteriorate.

As they continued their journey toward Wolfsbrünn, deep howls echoed through the forest from all directions. Six massive Dreadclaw werewolf vanguards emerged from the mist, surrounding their cart with coordinated precision. These were no mere scouts like those that had attacked Crow's Hollow - they were larger, more organized hunters with self-inflicted scars marking their pack allegiance.

The Traveler quickly cast a magical mist combined with a skunk-like smell to obscure their position, hoping to confuse the werewolves' keen senses. The strategy provided some concealment, but the pack had already detected them and began closing in for the attack. What followed was a desperate battle as the party fought to protect both themselves and the unconscious girl in their care.

The combat was fierce and chaotic, with Lena successfully binding multiple werewolves with magical brambles while Ulric and Mike coordinated devastating team attacks. Mike's Rain of Bones spell proved particularly effective, launching bone projectiles at multiple enemies while Ulric used his martial prowess to push and disorient their foes. The Traveler provided crucial support with light-based magic that made enemies vulnerable to additional damage.

Despite taking severe injuries that nearly brought Mike to the brink of death, the party's coordinated efforts proved too much for the werewolf pack. Mike's unique physiology allowed him to recover dramatically from what should have been fatal wounds, reforming his blob-like body back into human shape. The final coordinated assault from the entire party left the werewolves severely wounded and demoralized.

Recognizing they were outmatched and bleeding heavily, the surviving Dreadclaw werewolves broke free from their magical restraints and fled into the forest depths. The party quickly regrouped, loaded back into their cart, and continued their urgent journey to Wolfsbrünn. Mike transformed back into human form to avoid frightening the town guards, and they pressed onward with wolf blood still staining their wagon wheels.

As the small farming village of Wolfsbrünn finally came into view through the clearing mist, the party arrived with their precious cargo still clinging to life. The infected girl remained unconscious, her condition having worsened during the journey, but they had successfully delivered her to a place where divine healing might yet save her life. Their harrowing journey through the Schattwald had tested them all, but their determination to save an innocent child had seen them through the darkest depths of the haunted forest.
