BLOODSTONE #23: THE BLIGHTMOTHER

The trembling clearing fell silent in the wake of the party's victory over the Grove Warden, its moss-covered bark and splintered roots collapsed in a heap as the corrupted bramble wall that had blocked their path shuddered, withered, and parted. A narrow passage opened deeper into the Blightwood, and the forest seemed to exhale as the party stepped forward. The trees thinned, the fog lifted, and the world opened into a vast clearing dominated by a single impossible shape — the Blightoak, a towering, pitch-bleeding monolith of twisted roots and blackened bark, its branches stretching upward like pleading arms and its roots coiling like serpents around the bones of an ancient shrine.

Gathered beneath the Blightoak's shadow stood the most dangerous figures in all of Wachovia. Count Dracula and the Bellark faced one another with their dwindling armies at their backs, each holding one half of the legendary Bloodstone. Before either leader could begin their posturing in earnest, Mike O'Riza strode calmly between them mid-transformation out of his rhinoceros form, reached out with his tendrils, and plucked both halves from their hands with a cheerful "Oh, thank you!" Neither Dracula nor the Bellarch realized what had happened until Mike was already halfway to the tree. He pressed the two halves together, sealing them with his own slime, and the air ignited — a surge of crimson energy erupted outward in a shockwave that rattled the trees, split the earth, and sent a pulse of power spiraling into the sky.

The Bloodstone's restoration awakened something ancient. The Blightoak groaned, pitch bleeding from its bark as the roots twisted violently and branches snapped and reformed. A voice — soft, sorrowful, and venomous — whispered through the clearing: "At last, I found you." The roots at the base of the tree tore open, and a shape rose from the earth: a twisted, corrupted body of root and bramble shaped like a woman, but wrong in every way. Her limbs were too long, her fingers like thorns, and her face carved from bark and shadow — Victoria Belesand, the Blight Mother, her spirit trapped for centuries and now given a monstrous vessel. She turned her hollow, glowing eyes toward the Bloodstone and declared with centuries of rage layered in her voice that with it, she would spread the blight across every forest, every village, every soul, and every world. From the soil, the fog, and the graves of the Blightwood, her army rose — vampires twisted by the blight, werewolves with glowing red veins, and humans warped into rock-fused horrors, all howling in unison as the clearing shook.

The party moved quickly to position themselves. Sybil conjured a shimmering magical wall that slammed into place across the clearing, trapping several of the Blightborn and vanquishing a portion of the horde outright. Sir Ulric Thornstrom stepped forward to engage the remaining creatures, but one of the blighted werewolves unnaturally split its body apart to avoid his mace, reforming the moment the weapon struck the ground. Before Ulric could recover, the rest of the pack descended on him in a crushing dog-pile, six of the horrors swarming him from every direction. He endured the assault through sheer force of will, and when the moment came, he retaliated with devastating fury — sweeping the legs of one horror, shattering its skull, crushing the ribcage of another, and driving a horizontal strike through a third that blew its spine clean out through its back.

While Ulric carved through the horde, the Blight Mother drove thorny tendrils up through the earth beneath Sybil's wall, lashing out at Lena Craig, Greg the Haunted Armor, and the Traveler. The roots latched on and dragged, pulling Greg and the Traveler all the way through the barrier while Lena was left restrained within it. Pyrrhus of the Drakelyvn rushed to Ulric's aid, channeling magical energy through his fists and punching through the surrounding monsters on his way, tossing a health potion to Ulric as he passed. Sybil, surrounded by blighted vampires and struck with a severe blow, placed a hex on one of her attackers in retaliation, marking it as more vulnerable to the party's strikes. The Blight Mother's tendrils continued to lash at the party, and Sybil's wall eventually collapsed under the strain of the assault.

The Traveler called upon a powerful ally, summoning Mahira — a griffin blazing with pure source energy — to strike directly at the Blight Mother. The impact was tremendous, causing pieces of the Blight Mother to explode outward, but the severed chunks landed behind the Traveler and immediately reformed into autonomous, lashing extensions of her will, which tore into his duster and struck him with force. Pyrrhus and Mike O'Riza then coordinated a combined assault, launching streams of corrosive energy at the Blight Mother that caused her bark-like skin to hiss and dissolve. The attack permanently weakened her form, making her more vulnerable to everything that followed. Greg the Haunted Armor swung his massive greatsword in a powerful overhead strike, but the Blight Mother shifted her form just enough to let the blade pass through air — and her tendrils lashed back at him in retaliation, latching on and dealing a punishing blow.

Sybil then raised a shimmering rejuvenation barrier around the party, a magical dome that pulsed with healing energy and granted her allies resistance to the physical punishment raining down from outside it. Mike O'Riza transformed into a massive Tyrannosaurus Rex and positioned himself protectively over Greg, one enormous leg planted on either side of the haunted armor as Greg stared up at a pair of tiny dinosaur arms. With the party sheltered inside the dome, Sir Ulric Thornstrom channeled energy into a small glowing sphere, opened it, and sent a beam blazing into the sky. The clouds turned crimson. Then the sky fell. A devastating meteor swarm rained down upon the clearing, obliterating every last Blightborn minion and turning them all to ash, while the shockwaves rolled through the dome and left the party rattled but standing.

When the smoke cleared, the Blight Mother was still standing — barely, her form heavily scarred and smoldering — but standing. Mike O'Riza, still in his T-Rex form, lunged at her with a critical, earth-shaking strike, tearing her limb from limb as she attempted to reform. The pieces of her monstrous vessel scattered across the clearing and went still. The party stood victorious, the clearing silent save for the settling ash and the distant sound of Dracula and the Bellarch's forces holding the perimeter. But as Mike looked toward the Blightoak and the ritual that still awaited him, a haunting laugh echoed from deep within the ancient tree — and the party understood, with cold certainty, that destroying the Blight Mother's body had not been enough.
